Angel Planells, who was born in Cadaqués, relocated to Blanes (Girona) in 1929 and lived there for the rest of his life. He went to Barcelona in 1918 to study painting, lithography, and engraving, but returned home due to financial reasons. He released his first poems in the surrealist style, along with several art criticism articles, in 1928. In 1928 and 1929, Planells took part in his first group exhibitions at the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona (1929) and in Girona. As a teenage friend of Salvador Dalí, he was greatly influenced by him. In Cadaqués, he encountered René Magritte and other surrealist artists. In 1930, Planells held his first solo exhibition at the Dalmau Galleries. In 1936, Planells was a member of the Logicofobista group alongside artists such as Artur Carbonell i Carbonell, Leandre Cristòfol i Peralba, Àngel Ferrant, Esteve Francés, A. Gamboa-Rothwoss, A. G. Lamolla, Ramon Marinello, Joan Massanet, Maruja Mallo, Jaume Sans, Nàdia Sokalova, Remedios Varo and Joan Ismael, as well as art critic and theorist Magí Cassanyes. In 1936, the inaugural Logicofobista Exhibition was held in Barcelona. In the same year, three of Planells's works were displayed at the London International Surrealist Exhibition. His abundant career came to a halt with the Civil War. In the years of Franco's regime, he felt he could not openly pursue surrealism and instead painted landscapes and still lifes. Nevertheless, he created a few surrealist works for his own enjoyment. It was only in 1974-1975, with encouragement from French curator René Metras, that he returned to surrealist painting. Due to his shyness and introverted nature, his work was overshadowed by Dalí and, regrettably, is nearly unknown outside of the Spanish art community. |
