Who is A. R. Penck?

A. R. Penck (Ralf Winkler) was a German painter, printmaker, sculptor, and jazz drummer who lived from 5 October 1939 until 2 May 2017. He was a neo-expressionist who gained notoriety for his visually striking works that were influenced by primitive art.

Penck used symbolic acronyms to construct "worlds" and "experience spaces" in his paintings. He employed stick figures and graphic iconography that evoke graffiti art, Asian calligraphy, and cave paintings. He produced a series of paintings and sculptures in the 1960s and 1970s that he dubbed Standarts, a combination of the words "standard" and "art," echoing the German word standarte, which means banner or flag. Penck used this phrase to describe a kind of art that made use of basic, antiquated graphic symbols like trademarks or traffic signs. He rose to international fame in the 1980s for his pictographic, neo-primitivist paintings featuring human figures and other totemic motifs. He appeared in numerous significant productions in both New York City and London
